What does a pain management doctor do?

Before asking what a pain management visit costs, it helps to know what the doctor is there to do.
What the doctor does
Cleveland Clinic describes the role as choosing among approaches. Pain management specialists may recommend one approach or a combination of several to prevent, reduce or relieve pain.
It also says care can involve more than one person. You may have a team of pain management specialists who work together to help you manage long-term or severe pain.
What that means when you judge a price
Two points follow. The doctor's job, as described, is selection: one approach or several. And a team may be involved, so ask whether one visit and one plan come with one estimate or several. That is a question to put to the office, not a statement about how any office bills.
Questions for the office
Ask the office who will be on your team and what each person's part is. Ask which approaches your doctor is considering, and request an estimate that lists each one. Ask whether that estimate is a ballpark or a firm quote. Background reading is on the MedlinePlus chronic pain page, in the NCCIH review of complementary approaches, and in Healthline's guide to the causes of chronic pain.
A ballpark versus a written quote
A ballpark describes cases in general. A quote describes your case. Ask for the second, in writing, from any Garfield office you consider.
